This makes the young boy realize that he may have come across a superhero known as Samaritan, who went missing 25 years ago. However, Stallone insists that Samaritan is dead and that he’s merely a garbageman. He seems almost convincing until he’s hit by a speeding car and survives fully intact. The Samaritan trailer continues with Stallone explaining to this young boy that “things start to fall apart when you stop caring” and he says that he stopped caring a long time ago. However, he may be forced out of retirement when he becomes the target of a vicious criminal named Cyrus (Pilou Asbæk) who’s convinced he’s hiding something. The rest of the Samaritan trailer features Stallone dispatching more thugs as well as using a car to shield himself and the boy from an explosion.

Directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun, Overlord) Samaritan is just the latest in a trend of dark and gritty deconstructionist superhero movies and TV shows. Prime Video has been at the forefront of these types of stories for a while now. Their acclaimed series The Boys just wrapped its third season, and the streaming service also houses an animated adaptation of Invincible. Samaritan also bares a lot of similarities to the 2008 film Hancock, which starred actor Will Smith as an unconventional superhero. Like Samaritan, Smith’s Hancock was a hard-drinking apathetic superhero who was never very good at his job. While the film received mixed reviews, it was an example of one of the first superhero movies that took a darker and more adult approach to the genre.

Despite his age, Stallone has shown no sign of slowing down. His recent film credits include The Suicide Squad, where he voiced King Shark, as well as the first two Creed movies in which he reprised one of his most famous roles as boxer Rocky Balboa. Along with Samaritan, Stallone’s upcoming films include The Expendables 4 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
