Match Preview
While they have home advantage against Southampton on Tuesday, Swansea have been very much unconvincing in their fight against the drop and they will need to improve if they are to stay up. The Welsh outfit have not won a single game in all competitions since the beginning of March (when they defeated West Ham 4-1) and they have scored just twice in the eight games since.
The fact that they have had difficult games against Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in the past two months perhaps mitigates things for Carlos Carvalhal and his charges, but they will feel that they have what it takes to get the requisite results in the last two fixtures against the Saints and then Stoke - two teams who are ostensibly at the same level as them.
New Southampton boss Mark Hughes has only been in the hot seat since March and, while fortunes have barely improved since his appointment, he has put five points on the board, which has helped their chances of avoiding relegation to the Championship.
They come into the match following a disappointing result against Everton, which saw the Toffees snatch a late point at Goodison Park, but Hughes believes that his players will dust themselves down and get on with the task of extricating themselves from the drop zone.
“We’ve got a huge game very quickly and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” the Welsh manager said. “I don’t think we’re in any way damaged by the consequences of the game in terms of confidence, so we’ll be ready to go again and it’s up to us to get the job done."
