Chelsea have four games left in the Premier League before they bring the curtain down on the 2017-18 campaign with an FA Cup final date with Manchester United on May 19.
They are five points adrift of fourth-place Spurs with just 12 points up for grabs and their hopes of snatching a top-four finish - and Champions League qualification - rely on their rivals slipping up. But they must also ensure that they keep the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the remaining fixtures, with games against Liverpool, Huddersfield and Newcastle United to follow Saturday’s game against Swansea.
“We are playing against a team fighting to avoid relegation. In the last five games at home, Swansea have won four and drawn once. It means they are in good form,” Conte told reporters ahead of the match.“If we want to continue to have hope of taking a Champions League place, we need to get three points and try to put a bit on pressure on the teams who are ahead of us.
“The reality is that Tottenham have a big advantage, but the only way to try to put a bit pressure on them is to get three points tomorrow.”
Conte was keen to play up the home form of the Swans, but the truth is that they have not won once in their last six attempts in all competitions. However, their last meeting, at Stamford Bridge, was a close encounter, with the Blues securing three points thanks to a solitary goal from Antonio Rudiger, so he is, perhaps, right to remain wary.
Chelsea’s fortunes have nosedived since then, but their recent form, which has seen them win their last three matches, puts them in a formidable position to ensure a redemptive end to the season.
