The setting for Last Oasis paints the picture of a sun-baked apocalypse that is arguably harsher than Fallout’s radioactivity. The world has stopped turning, and a day lasts a year, so humans stay in the ever-moving twilight. Players survive by gathering resources to construct wooden contraptions called walkers, which transport them safely through dangerous areas.

Players can now explore the most inhospitable territory outside of outer space — an active volcanic waste. The new area resembles real-life lava fields, with vast stretches of black volcanic rock crossed with flows of brutally hot pahoehoe — that’s the Hawaiian term for ropy, pillowy lava that is generally between 1100 and 1200°C (2010 to 2190°F).

Luckily for volcanic explorers, there is a water cannon that will freeze lava flows and allow walkers to cross safely without bursting into flames. A nomad on the ground can harvest fresh lava glass, perhaps for crafting more advanced items. There are also flying lizards, which most would call dragons, that players can hunt.

There are good reasons to brave the expanse. Rare items will be found in greater abundance, so the trip is definitely worth it for collectors and explorers. Others are likely to venture out with provisions, for players who find themselves in dire circumstances in the harsh environment.

If the volcanic area resembled real life, it’s doubtful anyone could do anything there. With temperatures in the thousands of degrees, a nomad with no protective suit would quickly suffer from severe burns. Even a change of wind direction can force volcanologists to abandon an area due to dangerously high heat. Luckily for the nomads, this is a game, so the volcanic biome is a lot more survivable than it could be, making it one of the most exciting updates since Last Oasis relaunched.
