This is pretty good news for the fledgling superhero show, considering that the renewal comes after only one episode of the first season has aired. While the CW has had its fair share of stumbles and budget concerns, it would seem that Superman and Lois has been received well by audiences, and the CW was particularly impressed by the viewership for the premiere.

The show, which stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, is considered a “superhero drama” based on the relationship between Superman and his long-running love interest Lois Lane. It’s set within The CW’s “Arrowverse,” which shares continuity between several other shows like Arrow, The Flash, Batwoman, and more. Hoechlin made his first appearance as the Arrowverse version of Superman in the second season of Supergirl while Tulloch’s Lois Lane debuted in the Arrowverse’s 2018 crossover event titled Elseworlds.
As a basic premise, Superman and Lois follows Clark Kent and Lois Lane as they return to the Man of Steel’s hometown of Smallville with their kids in tow, hoping to set up a calmer life. Of course, things are never that easy for the Man of Steel and there is still danger lurking in the shadows. The premiere came just last week, and according to The CW, it was quite the event.
CEO Mark Pedowitz praised the simultaneous streaming and TV launch, calling it “a testament to the creativity, hard work, and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment.” The executive went on to call the show a “bonafide” hit, announcing the renewal of the show along with 12 other CW projects, hoping that the next season of shows will make give them a strong stable of reliably quality content.
The special premiere for Superman and Lois drew about 1.75 million viewers and had the largest same-day audience for any Arrowverse project since the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event in 2019. The CW also claims to have had the largest day-one streaming audience for a new series in its history. It would seem that Superman and Lois has paid off for The CW in a big way, and the company is clearly looking to double down, which means Superman fans can look forward to the show continuing even after the end of the first season.
Superman and Lois airs on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. on The CW.
