For many players of Super Smash Bros., the definitive way to play is to use the classic GameCube controller. Nintendo continued to support the controller with Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, where all you had to do was plug the controller into the system’s GC-specific ports. Other controller methods, such as the Wii Remote/Nunchuck combo, Wii Classic Controller and Wii Pro Controller were also supported along the way, but it’s always the GameCube controller (with its relatively loud buttons and sticks) that people seem to prefer.

So, when Nintendo announced that Super Smash Bros. Wii U would also keep the GameCube controller alive, fans were obviously pleased. How could any fan of the series resist a seemingly normal GameCube controller with a flaming Smash symbol decorating the front? That said, some may have a bit of a hard time justifying the purchase of another GameCube controller, especially if they already have others in their possession. They’re not very difficult controller to come across.

Just this morning, reviews for Super Smash Bros. 3DS debuted (including our own), praising the game for bringing the formerly Nintendo-console-exclusive to the handheld without sacrificing anything. In fact, while the 3DS is pushed to its limits, it rarely stumbles, and the portable version will be regarded as a strong entry in the beloved series.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS is soon upon us, and afterwards we’ll resume waiting for it’s console counterpart. Unfortunately, Nintendo has yet to officially announce a date for it, but there’s hope that it’s not far off. Nintendo could be holding off on revealing the game’s Wii U date until after the 3DS version is out worldwide. Let’s hope it isn’t pushed into 2015 like so many others.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS is out next Friday, October 3, 2014 in North America and Europe. Super Smash Bros. Wii U is still set to release this holiday season.
