Just like in the Kirby games, the pink character absorbs parts of an enemy’s appearance, as well as their powers, when sucking them into his mouth. That is no different with Minecraft’s Steve, as Kirby absorbs the character’s iconic blockiness while maintaining Kirby’s aesthetic. Kirby’s shoes become as blocky as he does, while his eyes also adopt a squarer shape that is fitting of the design.

Minecraft Kirby, while certainly adorable, also seems to be functional as well. Based on the images provided by Nintendo Europe, Kirby’s absorbed ability is one of the most interesting skills from Steve’s deep moveset: building. Kirby is seen building blocks in the images released and wielding Minecraft’s shovel in others, which in turn allows him to dig up parts of a stage to pull off certain moves. A white Kirby can also be seen within a shot, showing that Kirby’s alternate skins still work despite the extreme transformation.

Other screenshots featuring the endearing, blocky version of Kirby include glimpses of iron ingots on the floor. Iron will be used just like it is in Minecraft, with drops of the crafting resource being used by Steve (and possibly Kirby) to build things like iron swords. With the swords even having weapon durability, the crafting system featured within Smash is extremely detailed and is far more than just a flashy homage to Steve’s beloved game.

Though the Kirby screenshots do not show Minecraft’s Mii costumes in action or the Minecraft World’s many biomes, both features will be available when the DLC arrives in a few short weeks. The Minecraft stage will feature six of the game’s different weather types, while the Mii costumes will include a few different options for the Brawler and Swordfighter variants. With the former seeing a pig and creeper equitable and the latter allowing for diamond armor to be worn, plenty of Minecraft outfits are on the way within the upcoming DLC.

Smash’s Minecraft content comes with new music as well, with tracks from Minecraft spinoffs joining the fighting game’s extensive library. All the Minecraft content arrives in just a few weeks, so it will not be long before Kirby’s adorable Minecraft version is seen fighting with Minecraft Dungeons music playing in the background.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
