During the Nintendo Direct presentation, game director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed that fans still have a “few” more character reveals to look forward to, and that all of these characters will be announced prior to launch. While this may disappoint those who were hoping to be surprised by unexpected character additions, at least fans know that they have some exciting announcements to look forward to in regards to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate between now and when the game launches in December.

As for who could be added to the roster, it’s honestly hard to say. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is bringing back every fighter from the series for the latest entry, including third party characters like Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid and Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. With such a huge roster, it’s hard to come up with other possible fighters, but we have a few ideas.

One possibility is that Nintendo will dig even deeper into its history to add some obscure fighters, or maybe it will give in to fan demands and make Waluigi a playable character. Alternatively, fans may be able to expect more third party fighters to be added to the lineup - and in fact, it seems as though even Banjo and Kazooie could be added to the mix.

Nintendo and Microsoft seem to have a fairly healthy relationship at the time of this writing, with cross-play between the Switch and Xbox One, and the companies publicly supporting one another on social media platforms. Combine this with Phil Spencer already stating in the past that he wants to see Banjo and Kazooie in Super Smash Bros., and it seems like the door is open for the bear and bird to be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Of course, that’s just speculation at this time. One thing’s for certain, though, and that’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have at least a few more character reveals between now and launch.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will launch on December 7, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
