As indicated by the image below, Piranha Plant will be offered as a bonus free DLC character to those who purchase Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch before January 31, 2019 rolls around. Nintendo stated that it is aiming to have Piranha Plant available “around February 2019”, as a new amiibo figure based on the Super Mario Bros. character will be released on February 15, 2019.

Although Piranha Plant was virtually immobile in the Super Mario games, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be giving the carnivorous character a lot of ways to get around and fight in the game. For instance, it has the ability to amble across the screen and launch lunging attacks with a good deal of reach. What’s more is that Piranha Plant’s special attacks include the ability to spit poison and fire off spiky balls as well. Plus, its Final Smash turns it into Super Mario Sunshine’s Petey Piranha.

As of now, there’s no telling if those who miss out on the purchase window of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to get Piranha Plant will ever receive the opportunity again to obtain the character once it becomes available next February. Without a doubt, one of fighting game fans’ biggest pet peeves is when a character gets gated behind a wall for some reason or another, essentially leaving the roster incomplete.

So, hopefully the Big N winds up giving those who will miss out on Piranha Plant the first time around another chance to get the fighter in the future. Perhaps the character will be offered up once more after Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Season Pass has finished doling out all of the post-launch roster members.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to release on December 7, 2018 for Nintendo Switch.
