Following the gameplay breakdown of Min Min and how her unique skillset changes the meta in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Sakurai turned his attention to a new update coming to the Spirits mode. When going to the Spirits List under the collection option, players can now use a rematch feature to face off against any spirit they’ve either collected or have faced previously. The list now displays a new spirit icon under each of the thumbnails.

This icon indicates that the player can now rematch the spirit, taking them on as they did previously including any of the modifiers that were active during the match. Winning the match will give the player a score, which also factors in the strength of the spirits that the player used, meaning the lower the equipment power, the higher the score. Players will also be rewarded with Spirit Points based on the final score. Each spirit has its own high score target number and with so many spirits in the game, players will have plenty to work towards.

Sakurai then presented a short trailer with plenty of tips from the spirits team for dealing with some of the more trickier challenges like Pauline, who tends to flee during the battle, letting assist trophies do the work for her. In this case, players should bring a staff support item and increase the shooting item powers to hit her at a distance. Calamity Ganon can be overwhelmed by an equipped Bob-omb, increase in thrown items power, and then equipping a 50% damage item. Metal Mario is best dealt with using Donkey Kong and his hand slap move. After 80% damage, use the equipped Death’s Scythe to end the match quickly.

While this is a nice update, the big news surrounded the addition of Min Min and her ability to dish out big damage at longer ranges. Her unique stage, Spring Stadium, also adds a stadium event style feel to the game with unique elements like springboards that can launch players into the air. Before signing off, Sakurai mentioned that the core Smash Bros team is still working from home due to the global pandemic. At this point, the team remains on track but it’s not out of the question that some upcoming DLC characters may not make their launch on time due to tough working conditions and other issues that could crop up.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
